There is something about psychic phenomena which fascinates people. Perhaps it is the idea that we need nothing more than our minds to manifest extraordinary abilities, or the idea that we will move to another phase of evolution where we no longer have to rely on physical strength or skill. Even many technologies will cease to be necessary.
Because of this fascination, there are many people devoted to studying and understanding how psychic phenomena manifest themselves within people that demonstrate such abilities and measuring how strong a psychic force is being created. To do this, numerous tests and instruments have been developed by people interested in studying psychic phenomena.
The study of psychic powers itself is known as parapsychology and covers many different areas of psychic powers. The most commonly looked for are telepathy, the ability to communicate information from one mind to another without using any of the traditional senses, and precognition, knowing the future before it has come to pass. Many parapsychologists believe they have made excellent headway in both of these studies, obtaining results which they maintain are proof of humans displaying psychic abilities, but they face constant scepticism from the wider scientific community.
Nevertheless, parapsychology continues to be a field which people invest in and perform experiments in. They ensure that they follow strict procedures so that there is no way the results can be falsified, such as putting both participants into an environment of sensory deprivation where they are unable to hear or see anything that the other participants, or indeed anybody in the area, is doing.
Another psychic ability that is routinely tested is that of remote viewing, attempting to use psychic powers to view something that can not be viewed with normal sight, either because it is too far away or because it is hidden by something else. Experiments in remote viewing can involve a participant saying what is hidden in a box in front of them, what is drawn on a board behind them, or even what cards are picked by somebody in a different building.
Clearly, there is a lot to look in to, and perhaps parapsychology will generate some answers about what causes psychic phenomena in the future.
