Asperger's Syndrome - Understanding the Symptoms and Causes of Asperger's


Asperger's Syndrome (AS) is a neurological disorder named after Hans Asperger, a Viennese pediatrician who in 1944 first explained a reason for patterned normal intelligent but inefficient social behavior visible in some of his male patients. Asperger syndrome is typified by obsessions, odd speech patterns, poor social interactions, poor coordination and other peculiar mannerisms. Children with Asperger Syndrome have limited facial expressions and difficulty distinguishing body language. They are also found to engage in obsessive routines and on occasion may also show an unusual sensitivity to sensory stimuli. Often they find themselves bothered by things that no one else notices.

Asperger had noted that despite normal intelligence and language development the boys were unable to communicate effectively, may have problems with their attention span and organization or exhibit behaviors, which may be seen by others as eccentric or odd. Adults who have AS may also experience trouble signifying empathy for others as well as the characteristics listed above. AS continues for a lifetime, but early intervention services are helpful and may reduce symptoms over time.

The onset of diagnosis of AS is recognized later than what is typical in autism. Most are diagnosed around the ages of 5 and 9. Some of the symptoms of AS are hard to distinguish from other behavioral troubles, so the best idea is to have a doctor or health professional evaluate the symptoms. Since AS is difficult to diagnose, some patients may be diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) before a more precise diagnosis of AS can be made later on.

Investigations as to what causes Asperger Syndrome continues. Many investigators believe that the onset of AS may have many causes. Some have found some hereditary components while further research indicated that there might be an association with other mental health disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder. Some are investigating if any environmental factors that might play a role in the condition. With that said, research shows that AS is not caused by emotional deprivation or the upbringing of a person. AS is a neurological disorder, not a result of bad parenting.

No typical prescribed treatment regimen. Involving all the child's caregivers in the treatment of a child is beneficial. Many people can provide support as well as treatment. No cure for AS is available. The condition does not have to avert anyone from succeeding both academically and socially. Many researchers, as well as people living with AS, believe that Asperger's Syndrome is simply a difference and not a disability. Causes and (Natural) Remedies For Migraines


With all the stressors of today's hectic paced lifestyles and economic uncertainty, less than optimal nutrition, and deprived sleep patterns, it's no wonder more and more of my patients complain of getting headaches. Did you know that about 90% of the population gets at least 1 headache a year? That's a lot of headaches!

In addition about 16-17% of people get a specific type of headache, a migraine, or vascular, headache at least once in their life. They usually affect women more than men because of hormonal differences, but men certainly do get them. Some people get them as frequently as once a month and can be so intense that they cannot do their everyday activities!

If you're one of the people who suffer with migraines frequently, or even occasionally, I'd like to talk to you about what a migraine is and the various causes in order to help you prevent them. Then I'd like to share with you some helpful, nonaddicting, natural remedies for them.

What Is A Migraine Headache?

Simply stated, a migraine headache is a vascular headache. The term 'migraine' comes from an old French word, megrim, which refers to a syndrome of dizziness, head pain, and nausea. It eventually became known as 'migraine" and people who get them are called migraineurs.

It is believed that a migraine headache occurs due to an outside trigger that causes nerve spasms within the brain or the sheath covering the brain. This spasm constricts the blood vessels and creates the migraine "aura", or lights, that people often experience.

Next, the blood vessels over relax allowing too much blood flow to the brain. This causes pressure to build and pain to occur. Migraines can last for a few hours or, in some people, a few days! In short, migraines can be short and intense in duration or prolonged and miserable.

What Causes A Migraine Headache?

Recent research has identified a few neurochemical associations with migraines, namely dopamine and serotonin. These two important substances are "feel good" chemicals. When they become significantly imbalanced it is thought that this shift brings on a migraine headache. There are several causes, or triggers, that can cause these chemical imbalances. They include:

Smoking: Decreases oxygen and introduces chemicals into the bloodstream.

Certain Foods: Chocolate, monosodium glutamate (MSG), nuts, alcohol, cheese, are known irritants to migraine-sensitive people.

Erratic Meals: Eating on the run, missing meals, going without food for long periods of time can cause a shift in these brain chemicals.

Dehydration: Your brain is about 80% water. Dehydration can trigger a migraine.

Erratic Sleep Patterns: Not sleeping enough, or too much, can disrupt brain chemicals.

Hormone Fluctuations: Monthly hormonal shifts of estrogen and progesterone in women can trigger brain chemical imbalances.

Stress: Especially if chronic, can lead to all kinds of chemical imbalances in the body that can have a domino effect, i.e., one causes the other.

Sensory, Environmental Stimulants: Bright sunlight, bright colors, blinking lights, strong unpleasant smells, loud, pounding beat music, altitude and weather changes.

Certain Illnesses: Epilepsy, abnormal cholesterol levels, depression/anxiety, Tourette syndrome, hereditary tumors, stroke, certain eye diseases, inner ear/balance problems.

Symptoms of A Migraine Headache

Although many of my patients complain of occasional headaches, not all of them are migraines. Migraine headache shares many characteristics of the common headache but are generally much more intense. Every person who gets a migraine may also have their own specific symptoms, but these are the characteristic symptoms of a migraine headache:

Prodrome - a pre-headache period where you feel out of sorts and spacey.

Nausea - intense pain may trigger vomiting.

Inability to tolerate light or noise - prefer a dark, quiet room.

Irritability and fatigue - person wants to be left alone and to sleep.

What Helps A Migraine Headache?

There are many prescription drugs on the market called triptans that work to relieve migraine headache pain. However, did you know that there are many natural, alternative treatments that can remedy a migraine headache? Here they are:

Magnesium - many people who get migraines have magnesium deficiencies which can cause the nerve and muscle spasms that bring on the migraine. 400-600 mg a day.

Feverfew - this herb has been used since ancient times as a headache remedy and is popular in Europe as an alternative migraine treatment. If you're allergic to ragweed, chamomile or yarrow, or if you take blood thinners for any reason, do not take feverfew.

5-HTP - produces serotonin which can rebalance natural levels. Research shows it to both prevent and greatly reduce the severity of a migraine headache.

Butterbur - an herb proven effective in double blind studies at 75 mg twice a day to prevent migraines. Again, if you're allergic to ragweed, don't take butterbur.

DLPA - short for DL-phenylalanine, a naturally occurring amino acid/neurotransmitter that stimulates endorphins, another feel good hormone. Rebalances dopamine and serotonin and relieves pain. Research shows people who get migraines are almost always deficient in endorphins so DLPA can be beneficial. Found in health food stores.

Acupuncture/acupressure massage - stimulates certain meridians on the body and has proven effective in relieving stress and migraine pain.

Biofeedback - helps reduce stress if that is a trigger for you.

Chiropractic - an evaluation by a chiropractor can detect if there is a musculoskeletal/nerve component to your migraine. Nerves trapped between your neck or upper back vertebra of your spine may be triggering the pain.

As I tell my patients, headaches, especially migraines, can be miserable. I like to have them try natural remedies first, perhaps a combination of them, before we turn to prescription drugs. In addition, I like to focus on prevention as much as possible. Try some of the suggestions here to both prevent a migraine from occurring and stop it if it does. Keep a log of under what conditions your migraines occur and try to avoid those conditions as best you can in the future.

Causes and Complications of Chronic Pain - Adult Health and Wellness


Often called 'the fifth vital sign,' pain is as important as temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure as a key indicator of a patient's medical status. The longer we live, the more likely it is that we will eventually experience some type of injury or disease that results in temporary or even chronic pain. Surgeries become more frequent, both elective and those deemed vital to our survival and well-being. Injury and surgery leads to scar tissue that may cause lingering pain, mar our outer appearance, and diminish certain movement capabilities. Many of us also take a variety of pharmaceuticals and/or recreational drugs to delay some disease process or to alleviate symptoms of chronic physical or emotional pain. These drugs, even properly prescribed prescription drugs, may sometimes exacerbate the problems and even create new unexpected painful side effects.

Sometimes, continuing to take pain medication actually perpetuates the pain when the medication is stopped or increased doses may be required to maintain the same effect. With body therapy, on the other hand, over a period of time, fewer and fewer treatments may be required because the body cells remember the sensations of neuromuscular letting go and previously over stimulated nerve receptor cells begin to quiet down.

Causes of Pain

A popular belief, even among medical professionals, is that the most common cause for pain is a pinched nerve. According to this belief, there are three types of pain:

*Nocioception - immediate, protective pain

*Inflammatory - local cellular damage

*Neuropathic - one or more nerves are affected, delayed in onset, becomes chronic pain, requires physical input to heal the injury...and is radiculopathic (nerve root impingement causing weakness, numbness, and difficulty controlling certain muscles)

Chronic pain is believed to be caused by shortened (contracted) muscles resulting from neuropathy and radiculopathy. This theory is based upon Cannon's 1949 Law of Dennervation Supersensitivity which states: "Any measure (such as a nerve impingement caused by radiculopathy) which blocks the flow of motor impulses and deprives an organ or tissue of excitatory input (motor impulses) for a period of time, will cause abnormal functioning (called 'disuse sensitivity') in the receptor organ or tissue.

Recent research, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI's), has demonstrated that no matter how much a normal functioning spine is compressed or twisted, there is ample room in the space between the vertebrae for free movement of the nerve. Researchers are now suggesting that much of the pain may be caused by sensory receptor overload from postural imbalances. Through a process called "sensitization," a pattern may be set up in the body in which hyperexcited receptors feeding the central nervous system cause the brain to send signals to twist and torque the body to avoid pain.

The pain generating stimulus must be interrupted until the memory in the nerve cells has been forgotten. For many chronic pain cases, deep tissue therapy a few times every week can help these hyperexcited receptors feeding the central nervous system to quiet down and the sensation of pain to dissipate and even disappear.

Deconditioning Complications of Chronic Pain

Any part of the body that has severe and chronic pain will discontinue normal, symmetric, coordinated movement, and the person with pain will simply self-splint, immobilize, and decondition the area. Muscles, nerves and joints weaken and deteriorate leading to muscle atrophy, neuropathy, contracture, decreased movement, and gradual weight gain. To compensate for a weak, painful area, joints, nerves and muscles in other parts of the body will work overtime, leading to "overload and overuse syndrome.

Hormonal Complications of Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is a potent stressor that may affect every endocrine system in the body. Initially, the pain causes an excess of stress hormones (catecholamines and glucocorticoids) to help the body control pain and prevent damage. However, this excess may trigger hypertension and tachycardia, sometimes leading to cardiovascular death.

If severe pain continues and is not controlled, adrenal exhaustion and decreased stress hormone levels may result. The fluctuation between excess and deficient glucocorticoids, often called Cushing and Addison syndromes respectively, can lead to many severe symptoms, including: mental deficiencies, muscle weakness, edema, osteoporosis, diabetes, forming stones, tooth decay, and even testosterone deficiency. A further effect of pain and lowered levels of important hormones is a compromised immune system, lowered resistance to infections and slower healing of wounds when injured.

Neuropathic Complications of Chronic Pain

Persistent pain causes excess electrical activity in peripheral nerves, spinal cord and brain. This 'hot wire' effect appears to cause nerve tissue damage in the spine as well as the brain, which can lead to dementail and other organic brain problems.

Cardiovascular Effects of Chronic Pain

Pain increases blood pressure. This is not such a problem for a person with a normally low to average blood pressure. But for a person suffering from hypertension and high blood pressure, the increased blood pressure resulting from the body's pain response can lead to a more serious heart problem such as a stroke or aneurysm.

Pain, especially as we age, should not be taken lightly. There are all sorts of medications available to decrease the level of pain. And when needed, pain medication can literally save lives. But for chronic pain, there are so many diet, exercise and body therapy prescriptions that can not only be life saving but can transform the quality of a person's life.

Out of so many, rarely do the uncommon insomnia causes get discussed. Insomnia is characterized by problems falling or staying asleep. It is a condition that tens of millions have.

Oftentimes, natural events in life such as natural aging and the weather are insomnia causes. Additional insomnia causes are from human reactiona towards events that can cause stress, anxiety and depression. Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI)

One of the most rare insomnia causes is a disease called Fatal Familial Insomnia. FFI sufferers go on months of increasing insomnia which ends in death. Increasing insomnia develops into a point wherein the patient no longer gets to sleep.

It can showcase the effects of extreme sleep deprivation. Some FFI sufferers go through panic attacks, hallucinations and dementia after long periods of sleeplessness. A few even lose their ability to speak and a few motor functions.

FFI is a rare prion hereditary disease of the brain. An example of another prion disease would be madcow disease which was unheard of until recently. Similarly, FFI has been discovered in the late 1990's. There is yet much to know about this disease and a cure is yet to be found.

Sensory-Motor Rhythm (SMR) deficiency

More recent studies regarding sleep have been chemical and biological in nature. The study of brainwaves leads to the discovery of other causes of insomnia.

Something athletes have in abundance that insomniacs and people with ADHD don't is SMR. Sensory-Motor Rhythm (SMR) is the brainwave that is used for passive intellectual activities.

Increasing SMR of insomniacs resulted into deeper sleep and more energy throughout the day. It also helped reduce anxiety.

Vitamins

In general, vitamins are good. They are an important part of a healthy diet. However, too much or too little of some vitamins can cause insomnia.

Vitamin B12 deficiency (pernicious anemia) is caused by too little vitamin B12 in the diet. It could also be caused by the inability of the body to absorb it. It's one of few insomnia causes related to vitamin deficiency. This vitamin deficiency is rather serious if left untreated. It causes the production of red blood cells in the body to decrease. That is why it is called pernicious anemia.

Vitamin B1 (thiamin) is important in converting carbohydrates, fats, and alcohol into energy. It cleanses the body of toxins and prevents damage to the heart and nervous system. However, taking more than the recommended 1 mg a day is not a good idea. Too much of vitamin B1 results in toxicity. Insomnia is included among symptoms of toxicity.

There are various vitamins and minerals that can help people get a good night's sleep. Examples of which are vitamin B6 and vitamin C. Too much or too little of anything is bad. This is also true for these vitamins which the body needs to stay healthy. They can be insomnia causes.
