The Para-Psychological Phenomenon and Understanding It

To Visualize Para-psychic phenomenon

o The word Parapsychology (P-P) is a derivation of the Greek word "Para+Psychology" which means "Paranormal Events" which consists of extra sensory perception, survival of realization after bereavement and psycho kinesis.

o Psi is the name given to courses by parapsychologist, a term which is devoid of possessing any sort of mechanism.

o Para-psychological research brings forth various methods such as fieldwork and laboratory research are confidentially performed in confidential laboratories in universities across the globe despite the fact that there are today, many universities who are dynamically providing sponsorship in Para psychological research as compared to the past.

o Para psychological magazines often publish research results on Para-psychic research, though these days lesser amounts of articles on para psychological research are appearing in more traditional journals.

o Parapsychologists have carried out numerous investigations which included the random trials to determine the proof of psychokinesis, sensory deprivation and Ganzfield experiments were carried out to try extrasensory perception and research. All these trials were carried out under contract in the United Stats in order to look into the possibility of distant screening.

o Active parapsychologists in their quest to make scientist acknowledge their research have ended up turning their research into a complex matter. Scientists on the other hand consider this subject as pseudoscience

o Scientists like Stanley Krippner, Ray Hyman, and James Alcock have been critical to both the procedures and the consequences related to parapsychology.

o Cynical researchers have recommended that methodological mistakes provide the best clarification of obvious investigational achievements rather than anamolistic details offered by many parapsychologists. As a whole, the scientific community does not recognize any proofs which strengthen the existence of the paranormal.

Scope of Para-psychology

Parapsychologist's research on many perceived paranormal phenomenon's existing today; some of them are discussed as under:

1. Telepathy

Telepathy is the transfer of information's on the basis of various feelings among people and which are conveyed by any sense other than the usual five traditional senses.

2. Precognition

It is the prediction of any future events, which are yet to happen

3. Clairvoyance

It is the method by which information regard certain undisclosed distant locations are recovered by methods which have not yet been disclosed or discovered by modern science.

4. Psychokinesis

It is the capability of a person to manipulate matter, time, space or energy with his mind, how it is done is unknown to modern science.

5. Re-incarnation

The re-birth of a spirit after its death in a new body.

6. Hauntings

It is a phenomenon which has been quite often linked with ghosts and close encounters with them in places where a deceased person would usually be involved with or with the person's personal possessions.

Critical evaluation (P-P)

o Quite a number of parapsychology analysts believe that the human body till date is deprived of eminence and is not sufficiently denounced.

o The opposition to Para psychic psychology believe that the entire field of parapsychology is baseless and possess not consequences that are convincing enough of its existence.

o The Para-psychological Association have made it clear that they are not associated not investigate all of the so called "paranormal phenomenon's" in the world today such as astrology, paganism, UFOs, vampires, Bigfoot, alchemy, or witchcraft.

o Skeptics strongly believe and have affirmed that people's desire to have a regard for paranormal phenomenon is essentially much stronger than the proof of its non-existence.

Understanding Why Cats Have Whiskers

What are they? The long, stiff, specialized hairs, on a cat's face and body.

Name: Vibrissae; also known as tactile hairs or whiskers.

Description: They differ from the cat's normal body hair in that they are long, tapering, stiff yet flexible hairs. They are double and even three times the thickness of a normal cat hair and many times the length; they can grow to be extremely long.

The most obvious will be found in horizontal rows on the puffy area known as the whisker pad on the cheeks of a cats face, mainly in the area between the corner of a cat's mouth and the outer corner of the nose. Yet there are many more all around the face, in the area of the chin, and the eyebrows, also on the body especially around the front-, the hind legs and feet, although they are sometimes shorter.

Each whisker is rooted deeply in a follicle, surrounded by a highly developed sheath of muscle tissue, rich in nerves and sensory cells, sealed by a capsule of blood, called a blood sinus. The muscle is used to move the whisker in any direction to optimise use. The nerves connect the whisker to a large section of the brain of the cat especially reserved to processing the nerve impulses coming from the whiskers. Touching the whisker, causes it to move, the blood in the sinus is compressed to the opposite side. The blood amplifies the movement, thus allowing the sensor cells to detect the most minuscule of movement. All this: because the whiskers are one of the cat's main survival tools. Their function:

Measurement When a cat's facial whiskers are "put up" and alert, they are roughly equal to the width of the body. If you observe a cat testing an opening, it will stick its head in and out of the opening and then only proceed. What has happened is it was measuring the size of the hole compared to its body size and width. The cat has learnt with experience how much pressure on the sensor cells in the hair follicle equals a safe passage.

Navigation A cat has excellent sight many times that of man, but still it cannot see when it is completely dark, here its whiskers aid the cat to feel its way around. A very dark night or an enclosed area (man made like a tunnel or natural for example a cave) and there is no or very little light the cat will rely on air currents to navigate. Its whiskers can detect the slightest movement of air, air moves in distinct ways around barriers, the cat has learnt to read these signals.

Mood indication

Whiskers are a good indication of a cat's state of mind.

*Whiskers pulled back towards its body: - defensive, aggressive, angry.

*Whiskers pushed forward: - very happy, curious.

*"Put-up"-extended to their full in a circle around the face: - alert, interested, curious.

*Forward pointed: - excited, animated.

*Relaxed: - resting, content.

A few more facts:

*Similar to normal hair they do fall out naturally and re-grow.

*Cats whiskers are like human finger prints, the individual aligning is unique to each cat.

*The breed of cat called the "Sphinx", often have no whiskers.

Why you shouldn't cut or trim a cat's whiskers

*Clipping, cutting or otherwise removing the cat's whiskers is cruel; it is likened to removing one of our senses, e.g. Sight (to be blinded), smell (to lose your sense of smell), touch (to not be able to feel), taste (not to be able to taste anything) or hear (to be deaf), in a cats case they have the special sense of detection; the work of the whiskers.

*You will be depriving the animal of one of his means of communication (see mood indication above).

*You will be putting the animals life in danger, it will not be able to discern openings accurately and runs the danger of getting stuck, with possible fatal consequences.

Hester-Lynne Murdoch: I have been involved with cats for at least 45 years. I have bred them (long haired and short-haired breeds) and showed them with a good deal of success, but my most proud achievement is moving to a farm overrun with feral cats. I set out to tame them to with the purpose to neuter and spay each and every one to stop the uncontrolled breeding in the kindest way. I am happy to say the job (76 cats) was done in a time of 2 months and 4 days. Today no more cats are born there and as the older ones pass on, the population is becoming more and more acceptable. One more thing, I raised a Cape Blackfoot cat (African Wildcat species) from closed eyed kitten size to a mature male with the intention of releasing him back into the wild, this was done with great success. I still see him at a distance and am happy to report he is a huge (for a small breed), healthy and very successful male specimen today.

Asperger's Syndrome - Understanding the Symptoms and Causes of Asperger's

Asperger's Syndrome (AS) is a neurological disorder named after Hans Asperger, a Viennese pediatrician who in 1944 first explained a reason for patterned normal intelligent but inefficient social behavior visible in some of his male patients. Asperger syndrome is typified by obsessions, odd speech patterns, poor social interactions, poor coordination and other peculiar mannerisms. Children with Asperger Syndrome have limited facial expressions and difficulty distinguishing body language. They are also found to engage in obsessive routines and on occasion may also show an unusual sensitivity to sensory stimuli. Often they find themselves bothered by things that no one else notices.

Asperger had noted that despite normal intelligence and language development the boys were unable to communicate effectively, may have problems with their attention span and organization or exhibit behaviors, which may be seen by others as eccentric or odd. Adults who have AS may also experience trouble signifying empathy for others as well as the characteristics listed above. AS continues for a lifetime, but early intervention services are helpful and may reduce symptoms over time.

The onset of diagnosis of AS is recognized later than what is typical in autism. Most are diagnosed around the ages of 5 and 9. Some of the symptoms of AS are hard to distinguish from other behavioral troubles, so the best idea is to have a doctor or health professional evaluate the symptoms. Since AS is difficult to diagnose, some patients may be diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) before a more precise diagnosis of AS can be made later on.

Investigations as to what causes Asperger Syndrome continues. Many investigators believe that the onset of AS may have many causes. Some have found some hereditary components while further research indicated that there might be an association with other mental health disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder. Some are investigating if any environmental factors that might play a role in the condition. With that said, research shows that AS is not caused by emotional deprivation or the upbringing of a person. AS is a neurological disorder, not a result of bad parenting.

No typical prescribed treatment regimen. Involving all the child's caregivers in the treatment of a child is beneficial. Many people can provide support as well as treatment. No cure for AS is available. The condition does not have to avert anyone from succeeding both academically and socially. Many researchers, as well as people living with AS, believe that Asperger's Syndrome is simply a difference and not a disability. However, many people lead full and happy lives, which is made possible by appropriate education, resources and support.

Understanding the Need For Diabetic Neuropathy Socks

Diabetes is among the most difficult conditions to manage. Caused by a defect in insulin production, either the absence or inadequacy of it, this condition poses a lot of risks and is known to lead to many different complications all detrimental to one's health. All are aware that when one suffers from diabetes, they most likely are prone, or may already have existing foot problems. Why a diabetic easily develops foot problems is due to the conditions manifested by the disease itself. Though diabetes is characterized by other symptoms as well like very high blood sugar levels, excessive thirst and increased urination, poor circulation and neuropathy are the very culprits leading thousands of diabetics every year to permanent loss of limbs.

As the peripheral nervous system is responsible for the transmission of information from the brain to the peripheries, at the same time sending back sensory from the peripheries to the brain, any damage to it would interfere with all these connections. This is very common in diabetes. When that happens, any injury to the feet is not easily recognized by the brain, leaving them untreated for a long period of time. Eventually, infections would develop leading to complications. Poor circulation is caused by the disease's tendency to harden and block the arteries, limiting transport of blood, oxygen and nutrients to the rest of the body. The extremities become the most deprived areas when circulation is not good. Poor circulation slows down healing and even none at all. The lack of circulating blood reaching the injuries leads to gangrene, or death of tissues, which would have to eventually require amputation.

Sure there are treatments for diabetes available around. But like any other condition, preventing complications from ever occurring in the first place is always the best approach. In diabetes, when medication is required, taking it as scheduled is important. Regular blood sugar checks as well as other preventive measures advised by the physician should be strictly followed. Foot problems are most prevented by protecting your feet from any forms of injury. There are many socks intended for diabetics made available for those with the condition. Socks intended for peripheral neuropathy, which is as easily available, is best for diabetics. They are made with the most ideal fit to provide utmost comfort and relief from pressure. Materials are well chosen for these kinds of socks to provide needed warmth for colder climates.

As peripheral neuropathy often demonstrates numbness and tingling sensations of the hands and feet, and oftentimes lack of sensation at all, neuropathy socks for diabetics is designed to give ultimate protection to the feet. Some peripheral neuropathy socks are even laced with electro massage devices to improve circulation. Check them out at drugstores, local shoe departments and online. Start protecting your feet by being wise in choosing your socks.

Understanding Postpartum Psychiatric Issues

Spring is soon to arrive, with it new beginnings. A time of birth and rebirth. A time associ-ated with joy but also a time to be mindful of other forces.

Women have the unique quality of carrying and giving birth to the new hopes and dreams of the human species. This is a time that has both great expectations of hope and bounti-ful joy for all. These expectations however may be altered or only briefly experienced. The postpar-tum period may be influenced by several psychiatric issues. These include: "Baby Blues", postpartum depression and post-partum psychosis.

During the postpartum peri-od up to 85% of women experi-ence some form of mood dis-order. 10-15% of these women experience a more disabling and persistent form of mood disorder called postpartum depression or even psychosis.

The mildest form of postpar-tum dysfunction is the so called "Baby Blues". These generally consist of a week long period of mood lability with heightened irritability, anxiety and tearful-ness. Symptoms tend to peak around day 4 or 5 postpartum and gradually remit. This does not usually interfere with child-care, maternal bonding or harm to the newborn.

Of a more serious nature is postpartum depression. This occurs in 10-15% of the general population.

The principal phenomeno-logical symptoms of this include: a depressed mood as manifested by: hopelessness, lack of interest or joy- especially in areas to do with daily activities of childcare; feelings of emptiness, height-ened anxiety, which may include obsessional concerns about the baby's health and well-being.

A prior history of depression, genetic predisposition towards depression, prior postpartum issues or those who experience depression during pregnancy represent those with the highest risk.

The risk of most concern is the mother's loss of any inter-est in daily child care activities which may progress to having negative feelings towards the newborn. If this continues it may progress to having negative or intrusive thoughts and fears about harming herself, her child or both. These tend to be more obsessional than actual urges to do real harm.

Other negative and qualita-tive changes may occur- i.e., increased or decreased sleep and energy, worthlessness and guilt without adequate reason, appetite variations up or down, significant decreases in concen-tration and restlessness.

The other principal area of postpartum concern is much less common, but much more serious - Postpartum psychosis. Although some research shows that this can occur up to one year postpartum, most cases occur within a 2 week and up to 3 month postpartum period. This illness presents with the potential for many psychotic symptoms, i.e. hallucinations of any sensory organ, delusional mistaken beliefs or illogical thoughts, sleep and appetite dis-turbance, agitation or anxiety to very heightened levels, episodic mania or delirium, suicidal or homicidal thoughts or actions.

Women at greatest risk are those that have a prior history of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, other psychotic disorders or a history of a prior episode of the illness with another child.

Occasionally women with postpartum psychosis, like other forms of psychotic disease are not always the first ones to notice it or may be unable or unwilling to communicate their experiences or fears. The need for help may need to be communicated by a support - i.e. fam-ily, friend or professional. This help must be via a trained professional.

What needs to be done?

Q. What causes post-partum depres-sion?

A. Like other forms of depres-sion, there is no single cause, but rather a combination of fac-tors. These include genetic family histories, structural and chemical changes in brain function lead-ing to endocrine (hormonal) and immunological alterations. Significant increases of estrogen and progesterone during preg-nancy are precipitously followed by significant decreases in about 24hrs. postpartum. A clear depressive factor. Thyroid hor-mones follow this pattern also. Life events experienced as stress-ors combine to cause symptoms and illness.

Q. What about the demands of motherhood itself?

A. These can clearly contribute. For instance: postpartum physical fatigue from the delivery itself as well as sleep interrup-tion or deprivation caring for the newborn; stressors about being a "good mother", loss of who or what you did or thought of your-self before, feeling less attractive, lack of free time and simply over-whelmed with all the challenges of a new baby or babies. Women who are depressed during preg-nancy have a far greater risk of depression after giving birth.

Q. Can one just wait it out and let it pass?

A. Definitely not. Postpartum depression and certainly psy-chosis are very serious psychiatric disorders requiring psychiatric treatment as soon as possible. Some women are embarrassed or ashamed to feel these things at a time when they're supposed to feel happy. How will they be perceived- as unfit parents perhaps? Denial may occur.

Q. What can happen if women don't seek treatment?

A. Nothing good- either for mother or child, i.e. Poor birth weight or prematurity, rest-lessness for both, poor sleep for both, missed pre and post natal care, substance abuse, poor bond-ing of mother-child and simply not being able to meet the needs of your child. In psychosis, sui-cide/homicide risks can occur.

Treatment for these issues are available by competent, experi-enced physicians. Medication is generally helpful and required. If these are needed during pregnan-cy, the salient risks and benefits are assessed and weighed. Several modalities of psychotherapy and support groups are also very helpful. Rarely, hospitalization may be necessary. These interven-tions may be life saving for both mother and child.

All children should have the benefit of a healthy caring mother. All mothers deserve the opportunity to have rewarding pregnancies, births and maternal experiences. These illnesses can insidiously deprive both mother and child and do serious harm. If there are concerns, symptoms or caring observations of trouble, seek trained psychiatric care at once. Don't struggle alone in fear, shame or silence.

The blood amplifies the movement, thus allowing the sensor cells to detect the most miniscule of movement.
