Dangerous Side Effects From Lack Of Sleep


Experts recommend seven to nine hours of quality, deep sleep to have a healthy body. However, because of the crazy demands of this world, most people don't get their much needed amount of sleep and many have been suffering from sleep deprivation. What is more surprising though is that an enormous amount of people thick that lack of sleep is a common thing and isn't a big deal. Although in some cases this may be true, but chronic sleep deprivation can be a dangerous thing if it is not dealt with. There can be numerous side effects from lack of sleep that cannot only affect your personal life, but your professional life as well. Below are just some of these effects:

Headache. If you don't get enough sleep, it could result to headache which can later progress to unbearable migraines.

Decreased Concentration. When you are deprived of sleep, your brain muscles gets tired resulting to lowered concentration. This effect can be proved to be dangerous when you are in a job that involves operating a machine or driving vehicles.

Poor Memory Recollection. It is during a deep sleep that the brain is busy processing our day, making connections between events, sensory input, feelings and memories. If we don't have quality sleep, our brain may not be able to remember and process things better.

Depression and other Negative Behavioral Changes. Insomnia can have a drastic effect on your mental health. If you are constantly tired and drained, it can make you irritable, moody and negative. Moreover, sleep impacts many of the chemicals in your body, including serotonin. People with a deficiency in serotonin are more likely to suffer from depression.

Reduced Extent of Growth and Decreased immunity. This is mainly because insomnia can cause reduced secretion of the cortisol hormone.

Predisposition to Obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Lack of sleep also disturb other hormones that are responsible for the metabolism of compounds such as glucose.

Disturbed Body Repair Process. Without the right kind of sleep, our body cannot repair itself properly. Our body produces more protein when we sleep and these protein molecules are responsible in repairing damage in our body.

Increased Risk for Cancer. According to studies, people working the late shift have a higher risk for breast and colon cancer. If you don't get a good night's rest, it may reduce the level of melatonin, a hormone that regulates our sleep and is thought to protect against cancer by suppressing the growth of tumors.

As can be seen, there are a great number of side effects from lack of sleep. However, these side effects can be easily overcome by having a quality, deep sleep.
